Injury:  To reduce the risk of possibly hurting your dance partners and/or yourself it is safest to avoid wearing large or very dangly jewellery. It is possible for earrings, bracelets, necklaces etc  to get snagged or entangled during turns and spins and damage can be sustained to both jewellery and persons. Chunky watches and rings should also be avoided.

Re-Hydration:  Dancing can be warm work and you can quickly become dehydrated as the body looses moisture through perspiring.   It is important to replace this lost fluid by drinking water regularly throughout each session. Drinking water should be available at each venue but course attendees are advised to bring their own, at least to the first session. Alcohol is not permitted at either venue, only water and/or soft/sports drinks should be consumed during each course session.
WARMUP - It is important to warm up the bodies' muscles before engaging in any form of  extended exercise and this is true of dancing too. It is intended to use gentle warm up exercises at the start of each session by either doing basic footwork practice or some form of slow, less strenuous dance such as a Stroll.
CLOTHING - Dancing is warm work and the correct choice of clothing will help keep you cool and comfortable during the sessions. Casual, light weight, loose fitting clothing allowing freedom of movement is highly recommended. Clothing made from natural fibres such as cotton or cotton mix will be beneficial in keeping you feeling cool and comfortable. Shirts, Tee shirts or blouses are ideal. The ladies can wear either skirts or trousers. It is unlikely that you will need a change of shirt or top during these courses although it is common at extended dance sessions.

You have a few ways to enrol for this course [see below], however by far the easiest and quickest is to download the application form here and follow the instructions on the form - otherwise:-

1. Phone the WEA free on 0800 328 1060 and quote the course ref C3729409 you will need your credit card details to hand.
2. Online at the WEA website click here for the course search page and enter the course ref into the 'keyword' search box and hit the 'search' button.  Click on the 'more information' link at bottom right of the course detail page and follow the instructions and links for enrolling. You will need your credit card details.
3. By post, obtain a copy of the WEA 'Courses for Adults - Surrey' publication from your local library etc and complete the enrolment form contained therein and return to the WEA with your cheque.

If you have previously attended a WEA course run by the Fetcham & Bookham WEA then you should automatically receive, around early August, a courses pamphlet in which there will be course info and an application form and payment details.
4. Contact the local WEA volunteer organiser to both discuss the course, reserve your place and arrange payment by cheque.  It is recommended that in all cases to contact Mrs Joy Tapping on 01306 713355.

FOOTWEAR - You might well be on your feet continuously for some time before a break and so the choice of footwear is important for your comfort and enjoyment. You do not need special footwear for these courses, however any trainer type shoes should be avoided due to their higher resistance to spinning or turning on the ball of the foot.  Their use could possibly lead to leg and ankle fatigue, especially for the ladies who do most of the spinning/turning. Well fitting, lightweight leather or smooth soled shoes are ideal. If you already have any dancing shoes then, of course, wear these.

SAFETY - Fitness:  Everyone, young or not so young, can attend these courses, you just need to be physically fit, in general good health with reasonable levels of stamina. We will not be undertaking any ‘extreme’ lifting, highly energetic or ‘air’ moves during these courses, however it would be prudent for anyone  considering attending who has  a history of hip, back, or neck problems to get advice from their doctor.  Anyone, during a session, who considers a move to be beyond their ability or who becomes giddy or may have some concern in any way would be advised not attempt the move in question - just sit this one out and enjoy the music instead.
