LaVern Baker was an American Rhythm & Blues singer, originally billed as "Little Miss Sharecropper". She had taken the first name "LaVern" by 1952, when she began recording with Todd Rhodes and his band. In 1991, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her song "Jim Dandy" was named one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that shaped Rock and Roll. She is seen here performing [lip synching] a follow up 'Jim Dandy Got Married', on the Milt Grant TV Show May 1957. Watch out for shots of RNR dancing very similar to that we will be learning! |

THE MUSIC
- Rock n Roll music has
it’s roots in many musical genre including R&B, Country, Blues, Jazz,
Boogie Woogie, Gospel, Big Band and Rockabilly and of course classic
1950s RNR.

| Throughout these courses we
shall be using mainly authentic recordings of artists from all these
different styles covering the late 1930s to the early 1960s.
Additionally some contemporary material from more recent RnR artists
will be included. Expect to hear tracks by the more familiar and well known artists such as - Elvis [1935-77], The Andrews Sisters [1935-60], Cliff Richard [1940 - ], Jerry Lee Lewis [1935 - ], Fats Domino [1928 -], Glenn Miller [1904-44], Eddie Cochran [1938-60], Chuck Berry [1926 -] and Bill Haley [1025 - 81]. Also from the lesser know but hugely influential artists such as - Big Joe Turner [1911-85], LaVern Baker [1929-97], Louis Jordan [1908-75], Cab Calloway [1907-94], The Chordettes [1946-61], Louis Prima [1910 - 78], Wynonie Harris [1915 - 69], Dwight Yoham, The Lennerockers [present] and The Jive Aces [present] and many more. The tutor can provide handout playlists with track details for all music used if required by course members. The tutor has provided links here to You Tube videos of some of the RNR artists mentioned here so you can get a flavour of the artists and their music. As with all YouTube videos some links may get 'broken' from time to time. Don't forget to turn your speakers on!
