	Top saxophonist Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five perform the 1947 hit 'Reet, Petite and Gone in the film of the same name.
	The Andrews Sisters were a close harmony singing group who sold millions of records over their 25 year career of which this one, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, is a favourite.
	You just have to watch this one - a classic little seen Morecambe & Wise episode in which, with guest Leonard Rossiter, the three perform a spoof version of the Andrew's Sisters track - 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy' - recommended.
	Jerry Lee Lewis is best known for his instantly recognisable thumping piano style and has been highly influential in the development of Rock n Roll music. This links to his 'Great Balls of Fire' hit from 1957.
	Big Joe Turner's career last from the 1920's to the 1980s. Here he performs his version of the Rock n Roll classic 'Shake, Rattle and Roll made a hit a few years later by Bill Haley.

	Cab Calloway was a legendary fireball of talent, whose infectious "hi-de-hi's," "ho-deho's," scattin', and jivin', in a rich and vibrant baritone singing voice , became the spirited cry of people wanting to be happy.
	Probably the best known of the 'Big Swing Bands' - Glenn Miller. In this example of his work we see Miller and his orchestra performing their 1940s hit 'In the Mood'.
	The legendary Elvis Presley seen here performing 'Hound Dog' from 1956 one of his true great Rockabilly tracks from the pens of the famous song writing duo Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.
	Harry James and his Music Makers. In spring 1942 James and his band made the front page of the newspapers, when their gig at the Paramount Theatre New York caused traffic jams and riots. Harry James married Betty Grable in 1943.
	The Jive Aces - a contemporary music example, the UK's hardest working 6 piece Swing & Jive band, seen in this clip perfuming on a Hungarian TV program.
	LaVern Baker was an American Rhythm & Blues singer, originally billed as "Little Miss Sharecropper". She had taken the first name "LaVern" by 1952, when she began recording with Todd Rhodes and his band. In 1991, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her song "Jim Dandy" was named one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that shaped Rock and Roll. She is seen here performing [lip synching] a follow up 'Jim Dandy Got Married', on the Milt Grant TV Show May 1957. Watch out for shots of RNR dancing very similar to that we will be learning!

		THE MUSIC - Rock n Roll music has it’s roots in many musical genre including R&B, Country, Blues, Jazz, Boogie Woogie, Gospel, Big Band and Rockabilly and of course classic 1950s RNR.
	Throughout these courses we shall be using mainly authentic recordings of artists from all these different styles covering the late 1930s to the early 1960s. Additionally some contemporary material from more recent RnR artists will be included. Expect to hear tracks by the more familiar and well known artists such as - Elvis [1935-77], The Andrews Sisters [1935-60], Cliff Richard [1940 - ], Jerry Lee Lewis [1935 - ], Fats Domino [1928 -], Glenn Miller [1904-44], Eddie Cochran [1938-60], Chuck Berry [1926 -] and Bill Haley [1025 - 81]. Also from the lesser know but hugely influential artists such as - Big Joe Turner [1911-85], LaVern Baker [1929-97], Louis Jordan [1908-75], Cab Calloway [1907-94], The Chordettes [1946-61], Louis Prima [1910 - 78], Wynonie Harris [1915 - 69], Dwight Yoham, The Lennerockers [present] and The Jive Aces [present] and many more. The tutor can provide handout playlists with track details for all music used if required by course members.
